CS2 Chicken Eggs and Pets Explained: How to Get One, 34 Chickens, Zero Resale Value

The Egg Is Already In The Game Through Weekly Drops

The chicken egg is part of the live game, and it drops for Prime players right now. It arrived with the Rush Hour update on 22 September 2026, which is 23 September in UTC. The patch notes list the new 3v3 Rush mode, silent reloads, new crosshair styles and a change to how Premier picks maps. The only line about chickens says they now take damage from the Zeus x27. The egg is not mentioned at all. The first report came from Reddit user YamTurbulent8960 on the GlobalOffensive subreddit, and dataminer Gabe Follower reposted it on X just after midnight UTC. By the next morning PC Gamer, Dexerto and Hotspawn had covered it. This is what you can check in the game yourself:

• The Chicken Egg can appear as an option in the weekly care package after your first rank-up of the week
• Taking it uses both of your picks for that week
• It sits next to your character in the main menu, and you can rotate and inspect it like a skin
• It is not in the Steam inventory and cannot be traded or sold
• Eggs come in different colours
• A chicken feed item is already in the game

The Game Files Show What The Egg Turns Into

The first eggs dropped on 22 September, so everything after the egg is known only from the files for now. Valve has not said how long hatching takes. PC Gamer and SkinSniper put it at about a week. The files describe three stages: egg, chick and adult chicken. Each chicken gets a colour pattern generated for your account, as Gabe Follower reported in 2025. There are animations for holding the bird, setting it down, feeding it and petting it. PC Gamer and SIH.APP describe naming it and a photo booth with 11 poses, and dataminer Thour says it will be able to wear accessories. Dataminer CSMENT found a Pet Book, a scrapbook where you drag photos of your chicken onto pages. The pages are called Just Hatched, Early Days, A Little Older, Park Life and Road Trip, the last one with nods to Inferno, Overpass, Nuke, Mirage and Ancient. There are three breeds with 34 colour variants in total. Two are named after real breeds: the Polish, known for its big crest, and the Silkie, with feathers that look like fur.

Counter-Strike Has Had Chickens Since 1.6

The bird was an obvious choice. Two chickens stood in the market on cs_italy in Counter-Strike 1.6, unable to move. CS:GO set them free in 2012. They wandered Inferno, Italy and Militia, ran from gunfire and followed any player who pressed the use key on them until one of them died. That follow trick was the first pet in the series. Chickens have worn ghost sheets for Halloween and come back as green zombies, and Counter-Strike: Source is one of only two games in the series without them. The joke runs through this update too. The same patch made chickens vulnerable to the Zeus, and one image found next to the Pet Book shows scattered feathers and a lightning-like burst.

The First Pet Leak Came Before CS2 Was Released

Valve has been building this for more than three years. In May 2023, four months before CS2 launched, Gabe Follower found a PET slot in the loadout next to graffiti, pins and music kits, a pet capsule, and placeholder textures that showed a chicken. More pieces kept surfacing until the egg reached weekly drops 40 months later.

The Dogs In CS2 Came From A Hostage Map

If you remember dogs in CS2, that was Shelter, a community hostage map that Valve added to the official hostage queue in the July 2026 update that opened Premier Season 5. On Shelter the Counter-Terrorists carry a rescued dog on their back in place of a human hostage. It has nothing to do with pets. Every pet asset reported from the files since 2023 has been a chicken.

Right Now An Egg Has No Price On Any Market

Eggs, feed and chickens are bound to your account. None of it can be traded, listed on the Steam Community Market or sold on a third-party site, and nothing in the pet system costs money today. The egg still has a cost. It takes both weekly picks, so you give up the two items you would otherwise have chosen, usually a case and a skin. Those sell. The egg does not. SIH.APP expects fewer cases to reach the market if enough players choose eggs. That makes sense, and how much it matters depends on a pick rate only Valve can see.

The Files Show A Paid Route Valve Has Not Switched On

The free drop is one of two routes the files describe. In July 2025 dataminers found strings for an auction inside the Armory, where you spend credits that come with the $15.99 Armory Pass. The game marks those credits with stars. Gabe Follower told Escorenews how it would work: a limited item appears, players bid stars, the highest bid when the timer ends wins, and it looks possible to lose stars and win nothing. In October 2025 Hotspawn listed a chicken egg among the planned prizes. The 2023 files already mentioned a pet capsule, and capsules are the containers Valve uses to sell stickers. Valve shipped the free route first. My read is that the design looks like a Tamagotchi: one pet per account, according to SIH.APP, that needs feed and can leave. PC Gamer says a grown chicken eventually departs and leaves a profile photo, while SIH.APP says a neglected one may leave. A pet that leaves brings you back every week. A tradable item has to last. Colours unique to each account and variants that drop at different rates point the other way, toward the structure that makes skins worth money. Both readings fit what is known today. Nobody outside Valve knows which one wins.

The Drops Are Worth More Than The Egg Today

If you want the pet, the egg is the only way to get one, and it costs one week of drops. If you want value, take the case and the skin and sell them. In October 2025 one update let players trade five Covert skins up into a knife or gloves, and knife prices fell within hours. Estimates of the loss run from 272 million dollars, measured by CSMarketCap, to about two billion, measured by Esports.gg. If eggs or chickens ever become tradable, it will happen the same way, in a patch, overnight. Until then the chicken in your menu is a pet and nothing more. I am fine with that. Counter-Strike spent fourteen years with chickens that die from one bullet. One that stays around for a while is an upgrade.
